Pentel Aquash Brush: first impressions and three little watercolours

Do you know that feeling when you discover a new gadget and suddenly you just need it, right now? A little while ago, in a museum, I saw a group of students doing sketches of sculptures. One of them clearly stood out from the rest. He was working with a special water brush. While others were nervously looking around and checking if their cups with water were still standing right next to them (on that day there was a lot of visitors in the museum, so the risk of someone tripping over a cup was quite high), he just kept on painting with his special brush. Well, he seemed to be a fan of gadgets of all kinds, since instead of looking at the sculpture while painting he preferred to watch a photo of it, on his tablet ;-)

Since that day I knew that I had to try water brushes myself. I was really glad when Pentel sent me a set of three Aquash Brushes! That's great, since I've read loads of online reviews and it seems that Pentel water brushes are the best. Ones produced by other brands tend to have problems with leaking water, poor quality of bristles or wrong shape.

So today I have for you a review of Aquash Brushes and three quick watercolours that I made using them :-)

Let's start with what is an Aquash Brush? It's a synthetic brush with a barrel that you can fill with water. It's suitable for all wet techniques. There are three thicknesses of Aquash Brushes. Thanks to the barrel, the water flows into the brush tip and allows you to paint!

What I didn't like since the very beginning was the lack of clear markings on all three brushes. I only found small numbers (6 for the thinnest one, 4 for the medium one and 5 for the thickest one... dunno why). Okay, each brush has a cap with a slightly different colour, but it's usually hard to make a difference between them while painting if you don't remove the cap. I'd prefer to have brushes marked S, M and L, for example. It would be a lot easier! At the same time, the caps are really great. They protect the brush tips and when you're painting you can place them at the other end of you brush. That's perfect!

I found filling the barrel with water really easy if you use a very thin stream, otherwise water will be literally everywhere. What is great is that if you screw the barrel well after filling it with water, it won't leak, even if you shake it really hard :-)

Buziaki i miłego weekendu!
Getting used to squeeze the barrel in a right way takes some time. At the beginning I had the feeling that there were only two options: too little pressure (and no water going through the tip) or too much pressure (and water flooding everything around). After several attempts I managed to get used to the barrel and to control the waterflow :-) It's really great to use Aquash to create watercolours, since I can always add more water by squeezing the barrel and blend nicely my paint. It's so cool! But at the same time it's important to pay attention to, as I call them, "stray drops" that appear from nowhere and can ruin your painting.

Three quick watercolour paintings that you can see in today's post, were created using Aquash Brushes. I wanted to create three completely different works to test the brushes. While painting, however, I used a cup of water as well to rinse my brushes or remove excess paint. Theoretically, the colour can be removed by squeezing the barrel and making more water flow through the tip, but well, in that case you have to refill the barrel over and over again. I'm far too lazy for this :-)

To sum up, Aquash Brushes are really good. For me, someone who really rarely paints outside the house, the water barrel is just a nice and handy addition. What is really important for me is the quality of the synthetic bristles: it's really fantastic! Tips are flexible and perfectly shaped, it's a pure pleasure to paint using them! My only regret is that the bristles got stained really quickly, but that's not a real deal. Since the quality of the tips is so high, I think that you should consider getting yourself an Aquash Brush even if you're not into the water-barrel thing, but only looking for a good quality painting brush. Personally I know that I will use my three Aquash babies really often :-) But, if I can give you an advice, if you'd like to buy only one of three Aquash Brushes, go for the thickest one. It's most versatile since you can use it to colour quite big surface or use it to paint small details as well. The thinnest Aquash brush is also great for details. And the medium one is the least useful of the three, in my opinion. But it all depends on what and how you like to paint :-)

I hope that you find my review of Pentel's Aquash Brushes useful :-) And that you like my three quick watercolours! Have a great weekend, hugs!
